How the Korea tax refund works
Prices in Korea include 10% VAT, so the VAT inside a receipt is about 1/11 of the total. Foreign visitors (non-residents) who buy at stores with a “Tax Free” sign can get this back, minus a handling fee, if they take the goods out of Korea within 3 months of purchase.
| Rule | Amount |
|---|---|
| Minimum purchase per receipt | ₩15,000 (tax included) |
| Instant refund in store, per receipt | Under ₩1,000,000 |
| Instant refund, total per trip | Up to ₩5,000,000 |
| Electronic check at airport kiosk | Receipts up to ₩6,000,000 |
| Take goods out of Korea within | 3 months of purchase |
Instant refund vs airport refund
Instant refund: show your passport at the checkout and the store deducts the tax on the spot. It works for receipts under ₩1 million, until your instant refunds for the trip reach ₩5 million. After that, or for larger receipts, you pay the full price and claim at departure.
Airport refund: at Incheon or Gimpo, use the tax refund kiosks before or after security (check where your operator's kiosk is), scan your passport and receipts, and collect cash or a card refund. Large receipts may need a customs check of the goods, so keep them unopened and in your carry-on if possible.
Who cannot claim
Korean residents, diplomats stationed in Korea and US/UN forces personnel are excluded. Tobacco is not eligible.
